Charles Larned papers, 1767-1893.

The collection contains legal and personal papers of Charles Larned and his son Sylvester. As an early attorney of Detroit, Charles Larned became the owner of numerous letters and other documents of his clients, which add much interest to the collection. Earliest of these is an inventory of the property of Louis Vesciere and his recently deceased wife, Maria Louise La Foix, of Detroit, March 9, 1767. A Chippewa deed of land on St. Clair River, July 24, 1785, supplies incidental proof that the river's name does not derive from Governor Arthur St. Clair. A letter of F. Barnard, Prairie du Chien, May 14, 1800, relates Winnebago murders of soldiers at Rock Island and fears that a serious war is imminent.
